How to Repair a Loud Muffler

Exhaust System Sealer

Mufflers, or silencers, are part of your vehicles exhaust system. Tubular metal pipes carry exhaust gases from the engine away from the passenger area of the vehicle. Without some type of silencer, your vehicle would be extremely loud. Mufflers are mounted in-line with pipes and contain baffles that quiet the exhaust. Since mufflers are made from sheet metal, they will deteriorate and rust. Some mufflers may be repaired temporarily until they can be replaced.

Instructions

1 Chock the front wheels of the vehicle to prevent movement. Raise the rear of the vehicle with a floor jack and place jack stands under the rear frame rails just ahead of the rear wheels. Lower the jack and slide it from under the vehicle. Let the exhaust system cool down for at least one hour if the vehicle’s engine has been run recently.

2 Wrap muffler patch tape around the muffler directly over the hole or damaged area. Make several passes around the muffler and overlap each pass approximately ½ inch. Cut the excess tape off with a pair of scissors. Smooth down the tape with your hand. The muffler patch tape will cure once the vehicle's exhaust system warms up to operating temperature. Follow subsequent steps if the muffler’s inlet or outlet pipe is rusted or damaged.

3 Cut the top and bottom from the can with a can opener. The can's diameter should be slightly larger than the diameter of your muffler inlet or outlet pipe. Cut the can lengthwise from top to bottom with a pair of tin snips.

4 Apply an exhaust system sealer from a squeeze tube around the damaged area on the inlet or outlet pipe. Spread the can apart just enough so that it will slide over the pipe. Squeeze the can together with your hand. Slide a muffler clamp over the can that has the same diameter of the inlet or outlet pipe. Use two clamps on each end of the repair area, if desired. Tighten the nuts on the muffler clamps with an adjustable wrench in a clockwise direction.

5 Tie the muffler up if the mounting has rusted with metal wire or lengths of wire coat hanger. Loop the wire around the frame rail or a cross member. Do not wrap wire around axles, drive shafts or suspension components.

6 Raise the vehicle with the floor jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the jack. Drive the vehicle until it reaches operating temperature to cure the patch tape or sealer.

Tips & Warnings

Any repair to a muffler is temporary at best, and should only be used long enough to get you to a repair shop. Have your muffler replaced with a new one as soon as possible.

Caulk is a sealant used to fill exposed seams on both interior and exterior applications. The versatile compound is available in different forms that are suited for particular types of projects. Applying caulk on copper surfaces can be most effectively accomplished with Butyl Sealant. This rubber sealant is the strongest caulking option and can provide a bond durable enough to seal metal. Butyl Sealant is intended for heavier surfaces and outdoor applications. Caulking on copper yourself will require the appropriate supplies and the proper method. 

Instructions

1 Prepare a well-ventilated workspace and protect your hands with a pair of latex gloves.

2 Wipe the copper surface with a damp rag to clean the targeted areas of any loose debris and residue. Dry the exposed seams thoroughly before proceeding with the Butyl Sealant.

3 Load a cartridge of butyl rubber sealant into the caulking gun. Squeeze a bead of caulk no more than 1/4-inch thick to one end of a seam.

4 Proceed to apply the caulk along the entire length of the copper seam. Do not attempt to smooth Butyl Sealant as it is the most adhesive sealant and will stick to virtually any applicator.

5 Repeat these steps for all desired areas and allow the Butyl caulking to cure overnight.

Butyl Sealant is one of the most durable sealants on the market. It is intended for filling spaces larger than typical household joints, such as those found in bathrooms and kitchens. Butyl Sealant is also one of the most water-resistant sealant available, and because it never hardens completely, it can even withstand the random movement of shear paint. The sealing compound creates a bond strong enough for stone, brick, concrete and metal but can be rather messy to handle. Proper application of Butyl Sealant will determine its effectiveness.

Instructions

1 Soak the cartridge of Butyl Sealant in warm water for about 20 minutes if it appears to be stiff. Cold temperatures can sometimes harden caulk, making it difficult to squeeze from a caulking gun.

2 Load the cartridge into a caulking gun to apply it. Always clear the targeted areas of loose debris or residue before sealing them.

3 Apply a bead of the Butyl Sealant to one end of a seam. Steadily run the caulking gun along the entire length of the seam, contouring the shape of the targeted surface.

4 Do not attempt to smooth Butyl Sealant like other sealants. It is not only one of the most durable caulks but is is also one of the most adhesive. Trying to spread it will most certainly result in the Butyl Sealant sticking to the applicator, creating a messy application; always leave a bead of Butyl Sealant as-is once you have laid it down.

5 Allow Butyl Sealant to cure to the best of its ability for two to three days before painting it. It never completely dries and retains its tacky texture once it has bonded to a surface.

How to Dry Molecular Sieves

Chemists routinely use molecular sieve to dry — that is, remove water from — liquids and gases. A molecular sieve is a microporous material that comprises an open, three-dimensional network of aluminum, silicon and oxygen atoms. The porous structure of molecular sieves allows them to adsorb water molecules and exclude larger molecules.

Using an oven to heat molecular sieves to temperatures above 482 degrees Fahrenheit reverses this process. Drying molecular sieves in this manner allows you to reuse them numerous times before replacement.

Instructions

1 Place the molecular sieves in a 12-by-12-inch or larger aluminum baking pan. Spread them into a thin layer of a uniform thickness.

2 Place the baking pan in an oven, preferably toward the center.

3 Heat the molecular sieves in the oven at 482 degrees Fahrenheit (250 degrees Celsius) for at least two hours.

4 Transfer the molecular sieves to a desiccator and allow them to cool slowly.

5 Once the molecular sieves have cooled to near room temperature, transfer them to an airtight container for storage.

Polysulfide Sealant is often used in aerospace applications, acting as an adhesive and a sealant for panels on airplanes. This caulking is designed to be difficult to remove, but if it is stuck to something you don’t want or you need to separate some of the panels, you need to remove the caulking. This is more difficult when the caulk has cured, because it’s harder to scrape. The fix is to use an emulsifier/stripping agent specifically made for polysulfide sealant removal.

Instructions

1 Locate the affected area. Apply the emulsifier/stripping agent to the surface right out of the container.
2 Scrape the Polysulfide Sealant off the surface. Work all of the seams to make sure all of the caulking is gone.
3 Look for signs of Polysulfide Sealant that didn’t dissolve or isn’t accessible. Reapply the emulsifier/stripping agent and let it sit for five to 10 minutes. Scrape off again.

Tips & Warnings

If you have to apply the emulsifier/stripping agent to a vertical surface, look for one that comes in paste form. You can brush it onto the surface with a paintbrush.

How to Activate Molecular Sieves

Chemists frequently use drying agents to remove water or other contaminants from solvents. Molecular sieve are one of the most effective drying agents. They consist of aluminum, silicon, oxygen and other atoms arranged in a three-dimensional network with open channels; the size of the channels varies depending on the exact ratio of aluminum and silicon. Manufacturers designate the most common channel sizes as 3A, 4A, 5A or 10A, where the number represents the approximate size of the channels in angstroms. Before a scientist can use molecular sieves as a drying agent, she must “activate” them by removing all traces of water and other volatile compounds. Normally, this involves heating the sieves to 300 to 320 degrees Celsius for about 15 hours.

Instructions

1 Place the molecular sieves in a large, heat-resistant beaker or ceramic bowl. Use the largest beaker or bowl that will fit inside the laboratory-grade oven.
2 Place the beaker or bowl inside the oven.
3 Heat the molecular sieves at 300 to 320 degrees Celsius for at least 15 hours. Heating for longer periods is unnecessary, but will not damage the molecular sieves.
4 Remove the molecular sieves from the oven using heat-resistant gloves. If possible, place the molecular sieves in a desiccator to cool. Otherwise, allow the beaker to cool in the open air until it’s warm to the touch, and then transfer the molecular sieves to an airtight container and cap tightly.
