Butyl sealant seals exterior windows, doors, gutters and roofs with a long-lasting waterproof seal. This type of sealant repels moisture so it does not enter your home around openings and cause mold, mildew and wood rot. First-time users will need to practice to learn how to properly apply caulk with a caulking gun. The key is squeezing the trigger and moving the tip to correctly seal exterior openings.
Instructions
1 Place a butyl sealant cartridge on a flat surface. Place a utility knife at a 45-degree angle on the tip of the cartridge. Cut through the tip to open the cartridge.
2 Insert the cartridge into a caulking gun with the tip pointing down away from the handle. Push the pressure lever at the rear into the caulking gun. Squeeze the trigger to allow the caulk to flow.
3 Place the tip of the caulk cartridge on the exterior framework around a door or window. Squeeze the trigger and slowly move the caulking gun around the area you are sealing to form a continuous bead between the framework and the door or window. Continue squeezing the trigger and moving the caulk gun along the crack until it is entirely sealed.
4 Dip an index finger into a bowl of water. Rub your finger across the caulk and press it into the crack. Start at one point of the door or window frame and press the caulk into the area all around the frame work.
5 Wash your index finger with mineral spirits to remove the butyl sealant. Pour mineral spirits on a shop towel and wipe off any excess caulk around your seam to remove it from the door or window.
Tips & Warnings
butyl sealant can only be removed with mineral spirits because it is not a water-based product.
If you have a gap in the caulk bead that is not filled in, return to that area and apply a generous amount of caulk before spreading it in the area with your finger.
First-time users of a caulking gun might want to practice on a piece of newspaper.
